Public hearing set about Upper Peninsula limestone mine

NEWBERRY, Mich. (AP) - A public hearing is planned about a proposal to develop an Upper Peninsula limestone mine and processing facility.

Several officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have urged the agency's director to reject a land sale that is part of the plans. Canadian company Graymont Inc. says it believes concerns raised by DNR officials can be worked out through further negotiation.

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday night at the High School Auditorium at Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry. DNR staff will provide an overview of Graymont's plans and the recommendation from DNR officials. Public comment then will be heard.

Graymont wants mining privileges on about 10,360 acres of state-owned land. A decision from DNR Director Keith Creagh could happen as soon as next month.
