Officials: Traverse City fish pier could cost $8.7 million

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Preliminary designs indicate a proposed fishing pier in Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay could cost about $8.7 million.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle (http://bit.ly/1HeKhoR ) reports city officials recently got the plans back from consultants. Construction of the pier would cost about $5.3 million, plus about $3.4 million for beach improvements and public access connections to the rest of the waterfront and downtown Traverse City.

City officials say they expect to get help from grants to build the pier. But commissioner Ross Richardson says he's worried grants wouldn't cover needed construction on land.

The pier would extend roughly 500 feet into lake at the mouth of the Boardman River. The project is set to be reviewed by city commissioners Feb. 2.
