2 Illinois schools to receive national recognition
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Two Illinois schools with large low-income populations will receive national recognition for their academic achievement next week.
The State Board of Education announced the recognition Tuesday for Highland Elementary School in Skokie District 68 and HH Conrady Junior High School in North Palos District 117.
They will be honored during the National Title I Association's annual conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The association recognizes up to two schools per state in one of two categories. HH Conrady is among "high performing" schools, or those that have exceeded progress criteria set by the U.S. Education Department.
The other measures the degree to which a school has closed the "achievement gap" among different groups of students. Highland narrowed academic gaps among different racial and socio-economic groups.
