Ideas about gays ignore legal reality

Regarding letter of Jan. 4, by Le Anne Seaver of Hoffman Estates: Ms. Seaver, your views on gay marriage have nothing to do with gay Americans or those who do not associate being gay with being evil, as there are now laws in place protecting gay citizens in our free country.

Gay marriage is no longer an issue, it is a protected right. If you believe gay marriage is wrong even though you have nothing against gay people, that contradiction in terms is entirely yours to believe.

It appears from your letter that as long as we all know our place, we will all get along. If a gay couple gets turned away by a florist, that is the right of that florist, just like the bigoted owners of so many diners long ago turned away a person of color for being, well, of color.

What if a person is Muslim, or homeless, does that not also apply? Is heaven equally as segregated? If someone believes in gay marriage and you don't, shouldn't that person turn you away because their progressive Christian beliefs of tolerance and inclusiveness collide with your conservative Christian beliefs of hate the sin love the sinner?

It seems that your idea of “getting along” is staying separate and apart rather than united in peace and equality. I hope Heaven's not like that ...

Ms. Seaver, in paragraph four of your article, substitute “interracial marriage” for the word” gay.” Same difference. Same act of discrimination in an otherwise free country.

I own a barbershop. My customers are black, white, Muslim, gay, straight, Hispanic, transgender, Christian, Hindu, atheists, Jewish, Asian, conservative and progressive. Their hair all grows and cuts the same.

Like you said, let's all get along. Together, not apart. That will move us all forward. United.
