Jacobs handles Huntley as Orange eclipses 1,000

After falling just short in his previous game, it took Chrishawn Orange less than 2 minutes to eclipse the 1,000-point mark Friday.

The 6-foot-2 Jacobs senior scored on a layup off a feed from Kenton Mack to reach the mark early in the Golden Eagles' 58-39 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win against Huntley at the Eagles' Nest.

Orange finished the game with 1,012 career points after scoring 14 against the Red Raiders.

Mack led the Eagles with 16 points and also had 5 assists. Cameron Krutwig contributed 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks.

Huntley had no one in double figures as Jack Bessey and David Cruz led with 9 points apiece.

Jacobs took control with a 12-0 run late in the third quarter to go up 17-10. The Eagles pushed the lead to 35-17 by halftime and never looked back.

Huntley never gave up, though. The Raiders closed the third quarter with a 19-4 run, with Bessey scoring 6 points, to make it 46-36, but could get no closer. Krutwig then scored 7 straight points to open the fourth quarter, pushing the lead back to 17.

But the moment belonged to Orange.

"It's pretty significant," he said. "You put in a lot of work and then to get this accomplishment, it's pretty cool."

According to research by coach Jimmy Roberts and former coach Jim Hinkle, Orange is the seventh player in school history to reach the milestone and the first since 2009.

"There's been a lot of very, very good players that have gone through here," Roberts said. It's a good list to be a part of. There's some really, really good high school players that don't score a thousand points."

Jacobs moved to 13-5 overall and remained undefeated in the FVC Valley division at 4-0.

The raucous Jacobs crowd seemed to get into the Red Raiders' heads at times, but coach Will Benson couldn't fault his team's determination in mounting a late comeback.

"We've been down many times this year and I've been extremely impressed with our kids' toughness and heart because we always give them a fight," he said. "I think that's an important quality in why we've improved as much as we have."

Connor Boesch and Jason Zobott added 7 points apiece for Huntley (7-11, 2-2). Makomborero Tizora grabbed 7 rebounds while playing basically just the third quarter.
