Quincy school-security grant means metal detectors, cameras

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - Quincy public school officials will replace aging metal detectors, upgrade surveillance cameras and create a system for monitoring visitors with an $116,310 state grant.

Joel Murphy is the school district's business manager. The Quincy Herald-Whig reports (http://bit.ly/1yIohf4 ) Murphy told the school board's finance committee the grant was a portion of the $172,350 officials sought from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency's school-security grant program. That program is funded with federal money.

Without the extra money officials had to postpone improvements at Adams and Quincy high schools

The new equipment - plus upgrades to each school's doors - will be installed at Berrian, Dewey, Ellington, Madison, Monroe and Washington elementary schools.

The hardware will eventually be moved to five newly constructed elementary buildings over the next five years.
