Indiana city to ship its sludge elsewhere for treatment
PRINCETON, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana city with an aging sewer sludge-treatment center has opted to ship its sludge to Terre Haute for treatment.
Princeton's public works board approved a contract Tuesday under which about 191,000 gallons of sludge will be trucked to Terre Haute each week for treatment.
The Princeton Daily Clarion reports (http://bit.ly/1849Kld ) that Princeton spends roughly $262,000 per year to treat, store and dispose of roughly 4.7 million gallons of sludge.
Terre Haute will charge the city about $284,700 per year to treat Princeton's sludge at a new biofuels complex under development in Vigo County.
While that's more than it costs Princeton, city engineers say it would cost about $1 million to upgrade Princeton's treatment center for the sludge to continue to be treated there.
