Assembly speaker supports more flexibility for UW System

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he supports giving the University of Wisconsin System more flexibility.

System officials and lobbyists anticipate Gov. Scott Walker may propose in the state budget that the system operate with less legislative oversight or UW-Madison break away from the rest of the system. The governor is due to present his budget on Feb. 3.

Asked by a reporter Thursday for details on budget discussions on the system, Vos responded by saying he has supported giving the system more flexibility for a long time. He says more flexibility would help the system find savings and efficiencies, particularly in the procurement process. He says the process pre-dates the Internet and has grown outdated.
