Provo Councilman Hales dies; longtime civic leader, ad man

PROVO, Utah (AP) - Provo Municipal Councilman Stephen Hales has died.

The (Provo) Daily Herald (http://tinyurl.com/kfcpbg3) reports Hales died Wednesday at his home in Provo where he was undergoing treatments for an unspecified illness and recovering from surgery performed in December. His age wasn't immediately available.

A longtime civic leader, Hales was elected in November 2013 and took office last January. He owned an advertising firm and taught part-time at BYU. He also served as chairman of the local Redevelopment Agency and designed the Provo city flag.

Some of Hales' ancestors were among Provo's first pioneers.

He's survived by his wife, Calli, and six children. Their oldest son died from brain cancer in 2012.
