Former WSU star William Roffler dies at 84

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Former Washington State and NFL football player William "Bud" Roffler has died at the age of 84.

Family members told The Spokesman-Review newspaper that Roffler died of pneumonia Tuesday night at a Spokane hospital.

Roffler was born in 1930 in Pine City, Washington, but moved to Spokane before his sophomore year in high school and enrolled at Lewis and Clark High.

He also played football, basketball and baseball at Washington State in Pullman.

He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1952 and played three years in the NFL before his career was cut short by a concussion suffered in an auto accident.

Roffler was inducted into the Washington State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
