Safety urged after 2 Indiana teens die while ice fishing

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana authorities are asking ice fisherman to take precautions after two teenagers fell into frozen waters and died in Owen County.

Indiana Conservation Officer Max Winchell tells the Terre Haute Tribune Star (http://bit.ly/1DXTnne ) that ice fishermen should always wear life jackets. He calls a life jacket "your best defense." The officer also says fisherman should have ice picks and rope in case the ice breaks.

Winchell also suggests ice fisherman carry an ice auger to periodically check the depth of the ice.

Winchell responded Sunday when divers recovered 17-year-old Clark "Edward" Shoemaker of Spencer and 13-year-old Dominic Arthur of Coal City from the water. The boys were fishing with family at a quarry.
