Enrollment drops 32 percent at college in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Enrollment at Benedictine University in Springfield has dropped 32 percent this spring compared to last year.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (http://bit.ly/1yzAGEY ) the college announced last fall it would phase out its undergraduate programs to focus on "nontraditional" students.

Nicole Sellinger is university spokeswoman. She says there are 323 traditional students enrolled this spring compared to 476 a year ago. There were 520 last fall.

About 150 are freshmen and sophomores will have to find another school to finish their degrees. There are 68 juniors who will be able to complete their bachelor's programs at Benedictine.

Total enrollment is 512, compared with 795 in spring 2014.

As many as 100 faculty and staff members could be laid off in May.
