8 charged in West Englewood dog-fighting ring

CHICAGO (AP) - Eight people are facing criminal charges after police say they discovered a dog-fighting ring on the South Side of Chicago.

Officers responded to a report of dog fighting at a West Englewood home on Sunday night. Police say the officers found four wounded pit bulls, including one in severe distress, fresh blood and a dog-fighting ring inside of the home.

According to a press release, 22-year-old Jawaan Chick of Matteson has been charged with felony dog fighting by someone who owns or breeds fighting animals. Seven others are facing felony charges related to attending a dog fight.

It wasn't immediately clear if Chick has an attorney yet. He's being held without bail.

Police say the injured dogs were taken into custody by Animal Care and Control.
