Cops: Suspect in carjack killing was being treated for drugs
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A woman accused of stealing a 76-year-old man's pickup truck at a Burger King and running him over had walked away from a nearby drug treatment center, police said Monday.
Clifford Van Haywald was killed Sunday. He was a regular customer at the fast-food restaurant in Waterford Township, 30 miles northwest of Detroit, and nicknamed "Pops" by employees.
"He was there twice a day, three or four times a week," Detective Sgt. Brent Ross said.
A 38-year-old woman turned herself in after hearing news reports about Van Haywald's death. She's in jail and could face charges Tuesday.
Ross said the woman was staying at a drug treatment center near the Burger King but was free to leave at any time.
"She snatched the keys from his hand," he said. "She was able to get into the (pickup), start it and get away. That's when she drove over him."
Van Haywald, who lived in Walled Lake, was struck by a door and had fallen under the tires, Ross said.
"He went and got his French Toast Sticks and his small pop for breakfast, just like every Sunday," said granddaughter Amber Davis, 23. "Everybody there loved him. They knew him by name."
