Evansville mayor in favor of fencing contaminated site
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Evansville's mayor says he's in favor of erecting a fence around a contaminated industrial site to keep people, particularly children, off the tainted ground.
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says he'll meet Monday with city attorneys to discuss a proposal to surround the former Miller Plating & Metal Finishing property with fencing.
Winnecke tells the Evansville Courier & Press (http://bit.ly/1CDd8gf ) he's in favor of fencing the site as long as doing so poses no legal problems for the city and the funding can be found.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found hazardous wastes at the site after Miller Plating was shuttered in 2007, leading to a $1.4 million cleanup of those surface wastes.
But the site still must undergo an Indiana Department of Environmental Management-led soil cleanup that's in the planning stages.
