Drones are leading consumer revolution, CEO says

3-D Robotics Inc. Chief Executive Officer Chris Anderson says Amazon.com Inc. delivery drones could be dropping off packages at our doors a decade from now.

Drone development at Amazon, Google Inc. and other companies are helping to lead a consumer revolution, Anderson said in a wide-ranging interview in November with Bloomberg Television's Emily Chang.

"It's starting to become a commercial revolution as well," impacting agriculture and construction, he said.

3-D Robotics is a platform for unmanned aerial drones, which Anderson, former editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, predicts will put drone technology "in the hands of regular people." He told Chang that 3-D Robotics is taking "what's formerly military technology and putting it in the hands of civilians." Still, regulation remains a roadblock. The FAA has granted only 11 companies permission to fly drones for commercial purposes to date.
