Out-of-state setback for Stevenson

While Stevenson's boys basketball team remains undefeated in games played in Illinois this season, the Patriots on Saturday suffered their second loss out of state this month.

Playing in the prestigious Hoop Hall Classic at Blake Arena in Springfield, Mass., Stevenson lost to Findlay College Prep 84-58.

Jalen Brunson scored 26 points to lead Stevenson (15-2). Arizona-bound Allonso Trier had 27 points for the Pilots (17-0).

The Patriots' only other loss came on Jan. 2 against Chaminade in Wheeling, W. Va.

Lake Zurich 82, Carmel 74: Mike Travlos scored 36 points and Will McClaughry added 22 - both career highs - as the Bears captured the opening game for each team in Lake Zurich's MLK tournament.

Travlos and Nick Penny each picked up 2 fouls in the opening quarter, which was tied 18-18 heading into the second.

"We went into a 2-3 zone to protect the two starting guards from more foul trouble," said Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher, who missed the game due to a funeral.

Lake Zurich led 40-31 at halftime and 53-41 after three quarters. The Bears' lead stretched to as many as 18 point in the fourth quarter.

In Pitcher's place, assistant Don Rowley coached the team. He had 281 wins in 18 seasons as the head coach at Hersey. Lake Zurich starting forward Nick Meyer also missed the game to attend a club volleyball tournament.

Vernon Hills 79, Marian Central 54: In its first game of the day at Lake Zurich, the Cougars were led by Robby Nardini's game-high 24 points.

Matt Weaver added a season-high 22 points (two 3-s), and Sam Rattner scored nine, including a pair of 3-pointers.

North Chicago 73, Wauconda 62: On Friday night, the host Bulldogs led the North Suburban Prairie game 35-26 at halftime, only to get outscored 20-8 in the third quarter and 27-19 in the fourth.

Ben Carlson led Wauconda (9-8, 3-3) with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Matt Bulgarelli also scored 16 points for the Bulldogs, while Zac Lahrman had 10.
