Snowplow drivers save 120-year-old home from fire

ALLOUEZ, Mich. (AP) - Snow indirectly saved a 120-year-old house in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

A man plowing snow on a road in Keweenaw County noticed an orange glow in the basement window of Donna Effinger's home. His partner, Cody Carlson, took a fire extinguisher off the county truck and put out the blaze last week in Allouez (AL'-oh-way), a tiny town near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Effinger says she can't express enough thanks to Carlson and Tom Talbensaari, who plow roads and double as volunteer firefighters. The house was built by her great-great-grandfather.

WLUC-TV (http://bit.ly/1xCgZFu ) says the fire was caused by wood drying on a basement stove. It caused only minor damage.
