Police: Officer hurt, suspect dead in Indianapolis shootout
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police have released the name of a man who was shot and killed by an officer on the city's east side.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says the suspect was 27-year-old Donte Sowell of Indianapolis.
The department says the officer was conducting a traffic stop Thursday night when the suspect got out of the car and fled on foot.
Police say Sowell began shooting at the pursuing officer. The department says a private security guard witnessed the incident and joined the officer in an "intense firefight" against the suspect.
Sowell was shot multiple times and later died at a hospital. The department says the officer was shot in the foot, and was treated and released from a hospital.
The officer is on administrative leave pending an investigation.
