Police: Fake utility workers burglarize Milwaukee home

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Milwaukee police have issued a warning to residents after they say men posing as utility workers burglarized a home.

Lt. Mark Stanmeyer says a man claiming to be from the water department entered the home of a 71-year-old woman Tuesday. He says the man told the homeowner that he was checking for frozen pipes in the area.

The woman told police that she led the man into the basement for an inspection. After about 15 minutes, she said the man told her that everything was fine and left. Several hours later, the homeowner noticed there was money missing from her home.

Police believe an accomplice entered the home while the homeowner was in the basement.

A police spokeswoman says residents shouldn't let utility workers into their homes unless they've been notified.
