Kalamazoo County looking into high fees from I-94 pileup
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Kalamazoo County is investigating complaints of Interstate 94 pileup victims who say they had to pay excessive towing and lot fees following last week's 193-vehicle wreck.
The county's corporate counsel Thom Canny says some motorists report they were charged several hundred dollars when they went to get their vehicles from a towing business.
The county has a contract with the company to regulate the amount a person can be charged when the towing request is called in by the Kalamazoo County sheriff's department. The maximum charge would be $85 if the vehicle was towed within the county.
Canny tells the Kalamazoo Gazette (http://bit.ly/1x9aNG0 ) that the county is trying to figure out if the contract applies to the I-94 wreck because it was handled by the Michigan State Police.
