McCormick's Creek park to sell wood from blighted trees

SPENCER, Ind. (AP) - Indiana residents in need of firewood could get a bargain at a southern Indiana park this winter.

McCormick's Creek State Park plans to remove dead and dying ash and tulip trees from picnic and camping spots and offer the wood for sale to timber buyers and local residents.

Park manager Dwight Brooks tells the Greene County Daily World (http://bit.ly/1C14VUL ) that about 500 tulip trees have been affected by drought and tulip scale. The park also is removing ash trees in public spaces and along trails because of the emerald ash borer.

Park staff will cut the trees with help from the Department of Natural Resources. Timber buyers will be allowed to bid on the logs. Smaller trees will be available as firewood for $5 per truckload.
