Up to 60 deer to be killed in Jackson in annual effort

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - Officials say up to 60 deer will be killed in Jackson as part of the city's eighth annual deer cull at Ella Sharp Park.

City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow for the hunt, which is part of an effort to control the urban deer population. The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports (http://bit.ly/1u680w4 ) that for the second straight year both deer and coyotes may be killed.

As in the past, Jackson-based meat processing business Beef Barn will process the venison. Immanuel Lutheran Church volunteers will distribute the processed meat to needy families.

Nearly 60 deer and two coyotes were killed last year. Authorities say the Jackson area is among the worst in the state for crashes involving vehicles and deer.
