Grand Rapids police report homicide total drops in 2014
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Grand Rapids police say the number of homicides in the city declined to six in 2014 from 17 the previous year.
Police issued updated numbers for 2014 on Wednesday, saying the killings over the last two years are below the average of about 17 over the past 24 years. The Grand Rapids Press reports the 2014 number was the lowest in 50 years for the city.
None of the six killings included in last year's total involved the use of guns. Police say three resulted from stabbings and three involved assaults.
The December fatal shooting of 28-year-old Nathan Moore at an after-hours party at Your Barber Shop on the city's southeast side remains under investigation. Prosecutors haven't yet made a final determination on whether the death warrants homicide charges.
