Trout Unlimited gets DTE grant for river study
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Trout Unlimited says it has received a grant from the DTE Energy Foundation to help fund watershed restoration efforts around the state under the organization's River Stewards Program.
The program begun in 2009 uses volunteers to collect data on the health of cold-water rivers. Michigan has 36,000 miles of rivers and comprehensive information hasn't been gathered about the condition of fish habitat in most of them.
The data can help identify ways that cold-water fisheries are being limited and help the trout organization set priorities for stream improvement projects.
Fish habitat surveys have been completed in 10 trout fisheries.
