DETROIT (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says the Detroit school district remains under a financial emergency, and he's putting Flint emergency manager Darnell Earley in charge of the system.
Snyder announced the appointment Tuesday at Detroit's Burton International Academy. Earley replaces Jack Martin as emergency manager of the Detroit Public Schools, Michigan's largest school district.
Snyder says that the district has a deficit of about $170 million and the state needs to retain its financial control.
The governor appointed Earley as Flint's emergency manager in September 2013. Snyder on Tuesday named Jerry Ambrose as Earley's replacement in Flint.
Martin led the Detroit schools for 18 months. The district has been under emergency management since 2009 and has about 47,000 full-time students, down from about 104,000 in 2007.
