Police: Woman escapes custody, steals sheriff's vehicle

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities are searching for a 20-year-old woman who they say fled custody and stole a Marion County Sheriff's vehicle.

A department spokeswoman says Alexis Thomas was being arrested Monday morning at the Marion County Community Corrections building for violating warrants when she fled police custody. She says Thomas was in the back of a sheriff deputy's vehicle when she climbed into the front seat and drove off.

Authorities say Thomas crashed the vehicle into a brick wall west of downtown Indianapolis.

The spokeswoman says it's unclear how Thomas was able to steal the vehicle or if anyone was hurt during her escape. She says the sheriff's office was still searching for Thomas as of Monday night.
