Ice breakers making path for freighters on St. Clair River
PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - Three Coast Guard ice breakers were clearing a path for freighters through the St. Clair River.
The Times Herald of Port Huron reports (http://bwne.ws/1BiQiMl ) that several freighters were waiting Tuesday morning to navigate through the river, northeast of Detroit.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit controller Tracy Girard says the U.S. Coast Guard ship Neah Bay, and Canadian Coast Guard ships Griffon and Samuel Risley were breaking up ice in the river.
Freighters were being allowed through without an ice breaker escort on a case by case basis.
