Furman hires ex-James Madison assistant to lead defense

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Furman has hired Kyle Gillenwater as defensive coordinator.

Coach Bruce Fowler announced the hiring on Tuesday.

Gillenwater spent last year at Bridgewater College as defensive line and linebackers coach. Before that, Gillenwater served as linebackers coach at James Madison from 1999-2013. He added the school's defensive coordinator duties in 2009.

Gillenwater was on James Madison's staff when the Dukes won the 2004 NCAA I-AA championship, defeating Furman 14-13 at Paladin Stadium in that year's quarterfinals. He succeeds John Windham, who had been with Furman the previous four seasons.

The Paladins (3-9) lost nine consecutive games during the season to finish sixth in the Southern Conference.
