Scores of open seats in Illinois, but not enough candidates

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - There's a shortage of candidates for scores of open seats for everything from school boards to village boards in Illinois.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that (http://bit.ly/14kxgrH ) many races on the spring ballot in the Chicago suburbs have fewer candidates than available seats.

That includes the Cary Elementary District 26 school board, where Scott Coffey is the only candidate who's filed to be on the April ballot for three available seats.

Some communities expect that write-in candidates will step forward before the elections and could win with just a few votes.

Melissa Kaczkowski is superintendent at Roselle Elementary District 12, where there is only one candidate for four seats. Four incumbents did not file for re-election.

Kaczkowski says many people aren't prepared to make a four-year commitment.
