Former Annapolis Mayor Roger 'Pip' Moyer dies at 80

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Roger "Pip" Moyer, who served two terms as mayor of Annapolis, has died. He was 80.

The city announced Moyer's death, saying Moyer died early Saturday after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.

Moyer was first elected to the City Council in 1961. He was elected mayor in 1965 and again in 1969 and was known as a champion for civil rights and historic preservation. After the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Moyer was credited with keeping the peace in Annapolis.

After serving as mayor, Moyer worked for many years as a leader in the Annapolis Housing Authority.

Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides ordered city flags to be lowered to half-staff in Moyer's honor.
