Madison wildlife center rehabbing snowy owl, tundra swans

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Arctic birds suffering from injuries or lead poisoning are finding refuge at a wildlife center in Madison.

The Four Lakes Wildlife Center at the Dane County Humane Society has welcomed three tundra swans and a snowy owl since the beginning of the month. The owl was brought to the center on Jan. 1, while the swans arrived last weekend.

The swans were rescued from Lake Monona after nearby homeowners reported they were having trouble moving and lifting their heads. Tests showed they had severe lead poisoning.

A spokeswoman says it's still too early to tell whether they will eventually recover enough to be released.

The owl was found with injuries on its left leg, eye and wing and is expected to recover.

The Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/1xNcwoH ) reports the center also is treating a bald eagle and a goose for lead poisoning.
