Tentative settlement reached in lawsuit of Iowa jail inmate

WASHINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A tentative settlement has been reached in the lawsuit of a former jail inmate in Washington County who claims he was sexually assaulted by another inmate.

Brandon Brown, an attorney for the former jail inmate, says a notice of settlement was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Des Moines. Brown says the terms of the agreement are not available because they need to be finalized.

The Washington Evening Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1xWr1YZ ) the lawsuit names Washington County and its sheriff, Jerry Dunbar. A pretrial conference was scheduled for February.

The former jail inmate says the defendants violated his constitutional rights by failing to protect him from sexual assaults in his jail cell in 2011.

A message for David Schrock, the county's attorney in the case, was not immediately returned Thursday.
