Suspect accused of shooting trooper in Kimball surrenders

KIMBALL, S.D. (AP) - A man from rural Kimball accused of shooting a state trooper surrendered Thursday afternoon after barricading himself inside his house a day earlier, authorities said.

The Department of Public Safety said the 42-year-old man walked out mid-afternoon Thursday.

The standoff began Wednesday afternoon when he and a second man inside the house called the Brule County Sheriff's Office and threatened law enforcement, said Col. Craig Price, superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol

When authorities responded, a round was fired from the house that struck Sgt. John Koenig, a 28-year veteran with the Highway Patrol who's stationed in Chamberlain. He was in stable condition Thursday.

The second man, a 66-year-old who's also from Kimball, walked out Wednesday evening and was arrested on one count of accessory to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, authorities said.

"This has been a long stressful 24 hours for everyone involved with this standoff situation," Price said in a news release.

Numerous state and local law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, and negotiators were talking with the suspect throughout the ordeal, Price said.

The state South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case.

Few other details were released, including the men's relationship, what prompted them to call the sheriff's office, what type of weapon was used and whether other people were involved.

The Associated Press is not naming the men because they have not been formally charged.
