87-year-old Indianapolis woman dies after house fire

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An 87-year-old woman has died following a house fire in northeast Indianapolis.

Firefighters responded to the scene of the fire Wednesday evening after neighbors reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story residence. Ruth Macklin was rescued from the burning home but suffered from a heart attack outside. Indianapolis Fire Department Cpt. Rita L. Reith says CPR was performed on the woman at the scene.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

Macklin's son told firefighters she had rented the home for the past six years.

Reith says the fire is still under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
