Boys basketball: Week 5 MVP
Stevenson senior guard Jalen Brunson has earned Daily Herald boys basketball MVP honors for recent performances, which included an MVP honor at Proviso West's holiday tournament and a 48-point outburst against Chaminade (St. Louis).
Jalen Brunson, Stevenson: The Villanova-bound point guard set the bar high for 2015, scoring a season-high 48 points against St. Louis-power Chaminade in the Patriots' first game of the new year. He was coming off an MVP effort at Proviso West, where he scored 92 points over four games (all wins).
Colin Bonnett, Benet: The 6-foot-4 senior led the Redwings in an impressive run to the Pontiac Holiday Tournament championship game. Benet went 3-1 and Bonnett earned tournament most valuable player honors while averaging 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
Canaan Coffey, Batavia: Leading the Bulldogs to a 3-2 record and York consolation title bid, the 6-foot-2 junior set a Jack Tosh Tournament record with 22 three-point baskets. He popped for 6 against Stagg and Conant, 5 versus Sandburg. The all-tourney guard scored 24 points on Sandburg, averaging 17.4 points over the five games.
Kelvin Cortez-Harvey, St. Edward: This fluid sophomore saved his best for last in the title game of the IC Catholic Prep/Westmont Christmas Tournament. The 5-foot-8 guard led the Green Wave with 21 points in the title game as St. Edward garnered its second tournament championship this season with a 58-41 victory over ICCP.
Danny Sotos, Conant: Conant made a habit of winning the close ones in tournament play at York, with Sotos' senior leadership a clear reason why. After dropping their first game, Conant won four straight - the last three by 2, 2, and 3 points - on the way to a consolation championship. Sotos scored 17, 15 and 15 in those last three games and earned an all-tournament selection.
