Hoffman Estates candidate appeals removal from ballot

There could be five Hoffman Estates village trustee candidates on the April 7 ballot after all.

Candidate Prajesh "Pat" Patel is appealing the village electoral board's finding last month that he did not meet residency requirements to run for the village board.

Patel said he believes the electoral board overstepped its authority in allowing an objection questioning whether he was a registered voter to be amended to question his village residency.

The electoral board ruled that Patel's registration to vote at his Hoffman Estates address on Nov. 24 did not meet the state criteria that someone be a registered voter for a full year to be a qualified candidate for a particular jurisdiction.

Patel's appeal will be heard at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, in Cook County Circuit Court at the Daley Center in Chicago.

Also running for the three available trustee seats on the village board are incumbents Anna Newell, Gary Pilafas and Gary Stanton and former trustee Cary Collins.
