Music notes: Durty Nellie's hosts Ember Oceans' EP release

Local rockers

Suburban band Ember Oceans will celebrate the release of its new EP, “Horizon,” with a show Sunday in Palatine. The band delivers a striking brand of indie-pop, complete with guitars and dreamy synth lines. The scheduled opening band is the Moondogs. 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $8. Go to durtynellies.com.

For the kids

Justin Roberts, the Chicago-based musician who's one of the darlings of the preschool-pop scene, will perform two shows with bandmate Liam Davis this weekend in Barrington. Roberts' music is witty and vibrant enough for the little ones while also being catchy enough for the parents in the crowd. 1 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington. Seating is limited. For information, go to barringtonarealibrary.org.

Looking ahead ...

One of January's key rock shows is just around the corner: the Bloodshot Records 20th Anniversary Concert at Metro. Bloodshot, based right here in Chicago, is known coast to coast for its commitment to raw, honest country and rock 'n' roll music. The 20th anniversary show will include performances by label stalwarts like Lydia Loveless, Bobby Bare Jr., Jon Langford and others. This promises to be as raucous a show as you can imagine. Get your tickets now! 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., Chicago. $21. Go to metrochicago.com.
