LONDON (AP) - Chelsea was hurt by poor defense in a 5-3 loss at Tottenham on Thursday and is now tied with Manchester City for first place in the English Premier League. Defending champion Man City, given a big boost by Frank Lampard's goal in the 73rd minute, defeated Sunderland 3-2.
Tottenham capitalized on two goals by Harry Kane to beat its London rival for the first time in almost five years. This was the most goals Chelsea has given up in Jose Mourinho's two stints as manager.
"We made some defensive mistakes," Mourinho said. "Plus we were unlucky in every rebound and deflected shot."
Chelsea and Man City have 46 points and identical records. They are followed by Manchester United (37 points), Southampton (36), Tottenham (34), Arsenal (33) and West Ham (32).
Man City squandered a two-goal lead for the second time in four days after drawing 2-2 against Burnley on Sunday.
On New Year's Eve, City secured Lampard until the end of the Premier League season. He had been set to join sister club New York City FC for the start the Major League Soccer season in March. The 36-year-old former Chelsea midfielder moved into fourth place on the Premier League's career scoring list with his 176th goal, this one on a header off Gael Clichy's cross.
Liverpool threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with last-place Leicester. Arsenal lost 2-0 to Southampton. Man United drew 1-1 at Stoke.
