Driver charged in Barrington crash that delayed trains, police say

A man suspected of driving under the influence is accused of causing a two-car crash in Barrington that stopped train traffic for nearly an hour Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Thomas Russell of Fox River Grove was processed Tuesday on DUI charges by Barrington police after a two-car crash at 7:12 a.m. on Hart Road just south of Northwest Highway, said Steve Ruben, assistant chief of the Barrington Police Department. He said Russell, whose age was not immediately available, bonded out.

Ruben said Russell and the other driver were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

While no debris from the crash was on the nearby train tracks, Metra traffic on the Union Pacific Northwest Line was stopped as a precaution due to the proximity of the accident next to the train tracks, Ruben said.

Metra halted its trains north of the Barrington station for roughly 45 minutes until the accident was cleared about 8 a.m. Delays between 12 and 40 minutes were reported for two inbound trains.
