Students demonstrate the spirit of Christmas

Submitted by Our Lady of Humility Catholic Elementary School

Students in the seventh- and eighth-grade at Our Lady of Humility School prepared for Christmas this year by making lunches for the homeless and singing for the residents at two area facilities for the elderly.

"This year we wanted our students to understand they have the power to make other people happy," Principal Patrick Browne said. "We looked for ways the students could use their talents to share the joy of the season with others."

Under the leadership of music teacher Kristyne Cochrane the students visited Rolling Hills Manor and The Grove to share a medley of traditional Christmas songs. Spirits were lifted as the seniors sang and clapped along with the students.

"It was truly amazing to see so much good will," Cochrane said. "I will never forget seeing the students 'knuckle bump' goodbye the residents ... Many of the students expressed interest in visiting more often."

In addition to singing, students took time out of their religion class to make lunches for the homeless. Students in eighth grade worked together to make 45 lunches for the PADS Homeless Shelter in Libertyville.

"This year I am learning that I can really make a difference to others," eighth-grader Torren Grana Curry said. "There are a lot of people who are less fortunate than me."

"In a day when there is so much focus on getting, we need to remind everyone the true meaning of the season is giving and we can all give something," Principal Browne said.
