Sen. Durbin reacts to Senate CIA torture report

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois is calling the CIA interrogation practices described in the Senate Intelligence Committee's torture report troubling. He says it's "equally disturbing" that U.S. intelligence agencies "refused to disclose the truth even to the highest levels of government."

The report released Tuesday is the first public accounting of tactics employed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and it describes far harsher actions than had been widely known.

In a statement Tuesday, Durbin said the report "makes it clear that the CIA misled and impeded critical oversight by Congress" and the president.

Durbin is the chairman of the Senate's Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds the CIA and the intelligence community. He's long been highly critical of the CIA's use of abusive interrogation techniques.
