Health care workers deserve appreciation

As we approach the holidays, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our health care heroes - the physicians, nurses, technicians and other providers who, without fanfare or recognition, deliver unwavering care to the members of their communities each day. These individuals epitomize the word "hero" through their tireless work to make us feel safe in times of uncertainty. Their offices don't close for holidays or inclement weather. Many of them will spend the upcoming celebrations away from their loved ones.

As a parent, uncle and son, I recognize what a sacrifice this is. I am truly grateful for their dedication, and I am comforted knowing that these men and women are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to care for those I hold closest to my heart.

In my role position at the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council, I have the privilege of working closely with all 89 acute care hospitals in the Chicago area and of witnessing firsthand the incredible work our heroes do each day to protect our communities.

This past year we experienced grave threats to public well-being. In the face of adversity, our heroes bravely stepped up to protect the lives of many across this country. Regardless of the next threat to public health - whether it's the flu, MERS, Ebola or something we can't yet predict - our health care heroes are standing ready and they deserve our thanks, recognition and support.

So I ask each of you to join me this holiday season and throughout the year in saying "thank you" to the ones who care for you. They might just save your life one day.
