Chicago aldermen seek chokehold ban

Four members of the Chicago City Council are proposing a measure that would ban the city's police officers and others from using chokeholds when subduing suspects or other individuals.

The move announced Monday follows protests the erupted nationwide after a New York City grand jury's recent decision not to indict a police officer in the videoed chokehold death of Eric Garner in July.

The proposed Chicago prohibition introduced to the city's finance committee would apply to all Chicago police officers, deputy sheriffs, U.S. marshals and private security guards. If passed by the committee, the measure would go to the full City Council for a vote.

The Chicago Police Department says that since officers already are trained not to use chokeholds, the ordinance would reinforce its existing directives and practices.
