Elgin woman charged with arson after dumpster fire

An Elgin woman has been charged with arson after confessing to setting three dumpsters on fire near city hall early Thursday morning, officials said.

Stephanie L. Swon, 25, has been charged with arson and two counts of criminal damage to property, according to a news release from the Elgin Police Department.

The Elgin police and fire departments were called to a large fire on the south side of the parking deck at 95 Symphony Way around 12:30 a.m. and found three dumpsters on fire between city hall and the parking deck, the release said.

Firefighters extinguished the flames, which destroyed all three trash bins and damaged the concrete parking deck; police found Swon nearby, according to the release.

After questioning, police said Swon confessed to starting the fires.

Swon is will appear in Kane County bond court for a hearing Friday morning.
