Northbrook Park District Offers Winter Break Programs

How does this sound: camp in the winter? The Northbrook Park District invites students to enjoy field trips and fun activities during the school vacation at the end of December. Children can choose Winter Break Escapes, Multi-Sports Camp, Holiday Skate and Dance Camp, or hockey programs.

Beginning on December 22, students can travel with a Park District group to Rinkside Sports in Gurnee, Funway in Batavia, Enchanted Castle in Lombard, Brunswick's in Buffalo Grove and Party Fantasy in Mundelein. The December 26 trip combines two activities: Nickel City in Northbrook and a performance of The Wizard of Oz at the Marriot Theatre in Lincolnshire. The Winter Break Escapes welcome ages 5-12, and extended care is available before and after each trip at the Leisure Center, with supervised arts and crafts, sports, games and a snack. Children can choose as many days as they would like to attend.

"You don't have to worry about anything with our Winter Break Escapes program, where each day is full of planned activities, all-inclusive and organized for safety and fun," said Amanda Himert, Leisure Services Supervisor with the Park District. "There will be exciting individual and group games with Extended Care, before and after each program."

For those who want all sports, all the time, the Park District offers the Winter Break Multi-Sports Camp, also for ages 5-12. Children can enjoy a variety of sports at Greenbriar School.

"The camp is designed to be fun for kids of all sports abilities," said John Wilhelm, Leisure Services Supervisor. "Each day will feature a different sport and include drills, challenges, games, variations and time for campers to choose an activity. Campers will be active and engaged throughout the day." Extended care is available at the Leisure Center before and after each session, with transportation provided.

At the Northbrook Sports Center, winter campers can enjoy activities on and off the ice with the Holiday Skate and Dance Camp.

"Children, ages 5 and up, can enjoy skating, dancing, and arts and crafts in a safe, supervised setting," said Laila Schlesinger, Leisure Services Supervisor. The program is available on December 22, 23, 29 and 30 from 10am-3pm.

Also at the Sports Center, Sticks and Pucks, Youth Open Hockey and Public Skating are offered during the school vacation on a drop-in basis. Players/skaters just sign in and pay at the front desk. And, children don't get to have all the fun: adult open hockey is available, also. Hockey players need full equipment and a signed waiver (or parent signature if they're younger than 18).

December 19 at noon is the registration deadline for winter camp programs with the Northbrook Park District. For more information, families can visit nbparks.org, view the Winter Guide, or call 847•291•2995.
