Cubs non-tender pitcher Wright, catcher Baker

There were a couple of minor surprises Tuesday as the Cubs did not tender 2015 contracts to left-handed reliever Wesley Wright and backup catcher John Baker.

Eight other players eligible for salary arbitration were tendered contracts, including starting pitchers Travis Wood and Jake Arrieta and infielder Luis Valbuena.

Players not tendered contracts may sign back with their teams as free agents but at terms almost always more favorable to the club.

Baker played in 68 games and earned a share of fame when he went into the July 29 game as an emergency pitcher and got the win as the Cubs beat the Rockies in 16 innings.

Wright appeared in 58 games, going 0-3 with a 3.17 ERA.

There had been some speculation that the Cubs might not tender Wood a contract after the lefty went 8-13 with a 5.03 ERA this past season.

Other players tendered contracts were catcher Welington Castillo, outfielder Chris Coghlan, pitcher Felix Doubront, outfielder Justin Ruggiano and reliever Pedro Strop.

The Cubs' 40-man roster stands at 37.
