Waubonsie cafeteria manager charged with stealing more than $50,000 from school

The cafeteria manager at Waubonsie Valley High School appeared before a DuPage County judge Sunday facing allegations she stole more than $50,000 from the Aurora school.

Kristy Davis, 48, of the 3800 block of Junebreeze Lane in Naperville, faces one count of theft over $10,000, a Class 1 felony, which is punishable by a maximum four to 15 years in prison. Davis was arrested Friday by Aurora police, according to a statement Sunday from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Judge Robert Miller set bail for Davis at $30,000 Sunday. She posted bond and was released pending her next court appearance.

According to county prosecutors, Davis was employed by Aramark, a national food service company, as the high school's cafeteria manager. Authorities say Davis stole cash and checks that she was supposed to deposit in the school district's account between Oct. 3, 2013 and May 23, 2014. She would then try to cover her tracks by changing the amount of money on a later check to make up for the missing cash, according to the prosecutor's office.

"The very idea that someone would steal money from a school, particularly when schools across the state are facing serious funding challenges, is outrageous," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin said in a news release. "The allegations against Ms. Davis are very serious and will be met with the full force of the law."

Davis' next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 28.
