Consulate to guide immigrants through changes

INDIANAPOLIS - The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis is holding workshops and distributing information designed to protect illegal immigrants from schemes that claim to give them legal status under President Barack Obama's recent executive order.

Consul Jorge Sanchez Catano tells The Indianapolis Star the consulate is working with Latino organizations to distribute information about Obama's decision to expand benefits to those in the U.S. illegally. It plans to hold workshops and update information through a website and its phone app. It also expects to increase its working days and its services through a call center.

Sanchez says Obama's move could help 50,000 to 75,000 Mexicans in Indiana. About 5 million immigrants nationwide who entered the U.S. illegally could be protected from deportation.
