Judson orchestra to host concert

The Judson Civic Orchestra will host a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Herrick Chapel on the Elgin campus, 1151 N. State St. (Route 31).

The orchestra's special guest this day will be one of its Concerto Competition winners, Jakob Gerritsen, a student of Timothy Shaffer, principal bassist of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and string bass professor at Judson University and the Judson Community Music School. Jakob is a senior at Harry D. Jacobs High School in Algonquin. During the concert, he will perform the Dittersdorf Concerto for Double Bass.

"Jakob truly impressed us with his musicianship and technical skills during the competition. We are very much looking forward to an outstanding performance," said Judson Music Department Chairman Robert Kania.

In addition to being a Concerto Competition winner, Jakob has garnered a number of other impressive honors, which include winning the Illinois Music Education Association District and All-State competitions for three years and being principal bassist in the Chicago Youth Symphony.

The Judson Civic Orchestra has a number of great compositions in store during the concert, including Schubert's Overture to Rosamunde and Brahms' Symphony No. 1.

The concert admission is free.
